With every algorithm update, Google is making SEO more and more complex. The company has expressed its desire to improve the quality of their search results, filtering out spammers and content of lower relevance — but how that ‘relevance’ is determined is becoming increasingly difficult to understand to a definitive degree. The elements that are regularly highlighted by Google are ‘quality content’ and ‘genuine engagement’.

How to Set Goals When You're Feeling Stuck

With the New Year upon us, it’s goal-setting season. But how do you set goals when you’re feeling stuck?

I was in this situation a few years ago. After selling my first business and rewarding myself with an amazing year of travel, I returned with no home, no job, and no clear sense of what I wanted to do next. I felt lost. After years of annual SMART goals that I pinned on my bureau, I couldn’t figure out how to direct myself. It felt like a special version of hell for Type A people. I couldn’t plan my way through it.

Indian IT: Wake up and smell the opportunity

The same advances that are changing the IT landscape are also creating new opportunities, says Vivek Wadhwa, fellow at Stanford Law School and director of research at Duke University...

A few years ago, Wall Street Journal and Forbes published articles predicting the demise of Indian IT. I responded with an article that they were dead wrong. I said that the outsourcing market had a long way to go before IT peaked; rising salaries and attrition rates were not a cause for long-term concern; and Indian IT would soon become a $100 billion industry. It did.

Why more teens are quitting Facebook

Teenagers are turning their back on Facebook 'in their droves' and switching to simpler social networks and messaging apps, new research has found. Not only are 16-18 year olds moving on to rivals such as Snapchat, Whatsapp and evenTwitter, teens are embarrassed to be so much as associated with Facebook, as their parents adopt the network, researchers said.

"Where once parents worried about their children joining Facebook, the children now say it is their family that insists they stay there to post about their lives," said Daniel Miller, a professor of Anthropology at University College London, who works on the Global Social Media Impact Study.

What is Boxing Day? Why is it Called Boxing Day

What is Boxing Day?:

How many times am I asked - what is Boxing Day, or, why is it called Boxing Day? Arguments come thick and fast as to why and I hope, like me, you find the answers below interesting. But first off I must say; it has nothing to do with the sport of boxing.

It starts of course with our greed here in Britain and Ireland for a longer holiday; it’s not enough for us to have Christmas Day celebrations we have added on another day called Boxing Day. The day is a national holiday and one to spend with family and friends and eating up the leftovers. Its origins however, are steeped in history and tradition.

About Christmas !!

Christmas is both a sacred religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. For two millennia, people around the world have been observing it with traditions and practices that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas Day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, a spiritual leader whose teachings form the basis of their religion. Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. December 25–Christmas Day–has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1870.

Local Heroes: The Public Companies of Tomorrow

A big investor mantra over the past few of years has been “SoMoLo”, an acronym for the mega-trends “Social, Mobile, and Local”. How have these trends been performing for investors? Social clearly has been delivering huge, as evidenced by the very strong performance of the Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter IPOs. Mobile has arrived with a vengeance, with smartphones and tablets already generating more traffic for many consumer online businesses than PCs. But at this time last year the bloom looked to be off of the “local” rose, due at least in part to the very poor performance of Groupon as a public stock.

Coming Soon: DIY Apps and "Bot to Bot" Marketing

There are already more than a million different smartphone apps available for downloading for iOS, Android, Windows or Blackberry, and collectively these apps have now been downloaded about 50 billion times.

So whether you’re into games, stargazing, weight loss, or recipes, whether you need to look up TV schedules, credit card payments, a flight's status, or a movie's rating, if you can think of any subject area or routine task at all, chances are that something reasonably close to what you want has already been designed by some app developer somewhere (or by dozens of different app developers).

But that’s the problem, isn’t it? Reasonably close doesn’t win the kewpie doll. In fact, the words “reasonably close” mean that it's not exactly right. And if you’re just an ordinary consumer with no background in writing code, and no real knowledge of how an API works (or even what an “API” really is), good luck trying to talk someone into customizing an app for your own personal benefit.

IBM Patents Cryptography Invention to Advance Security in the Cloud

IBM announced it has patented a new cryptography solution that is aimed at enhancing privacy and security in the cloud.

IBM has patented yet another cloud computing innovation, this latest one for a breakthrough data encryption technique that is expected to further data privacy and strengthen cloud computing security.
The patented breakthrough, called "fully homomorphic encryption," could enable deep and unrestricted analysis of encrypted information—intentionally scrambled data—without surrendering confidentiality. IBM's solution has the potential to advance cloud computing privacy and security by enabling vendors to perform computations on client data, such as analyzing sales patterns, without exposing or revealing the original data.
In recent months, IBM patented a new technique for protecting sensitive data prior to transmitting it to the cloud, a cloud-based business process management (BPM) system and a cloud security invention that prevents mobile devices from running compromised code.
Now, with its new homomorphic encryption technique, IBM solves a daunting mathematical puzzle that confounded scientists since the invention of public-key encryption over 30 years ago.

Why We Still Need Humans to Run The Internet

Sometime today in the Rakuten marketplace, a customer is going to complain to a merchant. Perhaps an order arrived too slowly or a shoe did not fit or an apple was not as sweet as expected.

I don’t know what each party will say to the other, but I know one thing: they will communicate with one another. And for that reason alone, I know our business model will ultimately be successful.

We live in a world in which communication has moved to a digital platform. We text and tweet and email and post. Our communication takes place on a variety of screens.

Instagram Direct, Facebook Ads, Image Caching, and 'Nearby' Tweets: The Last Two Weeks in Digital Marketing

We've seen lots of interesting developments in digital marketing over the past two weeks. Here's a quick review, in case you missed anything:

This is exciting news for digital marketing and social media marketing as digital video ad spending is expected to grow to nearly $10 billion by 2017. Social video advertising will be a significant driver of that growth. Social advertising capabilities and expenditures have grown exponentially in 2013 and will continue to grow.

Jack Ford, my supervisor there, will have no problem verifying any of that for you."

IT sector bets big on SCAM in 2014

The $110-billion technology services sector looking for new growth engines will be shouting SCAM in 2014. A trend that started a few years back, albeit in silos, social networking, cloud services, analytics and mobile computing, or SCAM, is now converging and will collectively account for 89% of new technology spending growth in 2014, says research firm IDC.

Industry experts from IT services players such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro as well as analysts see SCAM as not just another opportunity but one that fundamentally changes how computing is done. "From the mainframe era, we came to mini-computing, client-server and web. While aspects of SCAM have been around, there's an overall shift in how users access information, work and entertain themselves. They're now using mobile devices and companies want solutions that cut across the SCAM areas.

Kindle Paperwhite vs Kobo Aura vs Nook GlowLight e-readers

Until I tried one, I never understood the appeal of e-book readers, given that tablets can do much more.

The e-reader's ease and comfort became apparent as I raced to finish the second "Hunger Games" book before the movie came out. I blew through several pages on a Kobo Aura while waiting for a sandwich in Cupertino, and a connecting flight in Charlotte, NC. The Aura, like the Kindle Paperwhite and the Nook GlowLight, was just the right size to hold while waiting in the aisle for passengers in front of me to stow their luggage.

Gaming News: GTA 5 Online Exploits Continue; Assassin’s Creed 4 Patch Detailed; Borderlands 2 $100K Loothunt Stats

"GTA 5" is, without a doubt, one of the games that made 2013 worth waiting for, at least for most gamers. But of course, being one of the "it" games of the year, the position also puts "GTA 5 Online" at an angle that many modders and hackers would tend to find attractive.

This is probably the reason why, despite the bug fixes that Rockstar Games has rolled out, there are still a couple of glitches and exploits in the game found by these certain individuals.

For instance, Xplore Gaming reports that a recent threat now seems to be the tendency of some players to hack into the GTA$ and then distribute them to random games via the servers.

"That is not true. I don't usually get distracted by questions like this which have nothing to do about the pitch," said Martino.

Roger Federer comes to Brisbane late this week after a year in which he lost 17 matches - the most he has dropped in 11 years.

He made no Grand Slam finals and, hampered by back pain for a prolonged period, could brook no argument with Novak Djokovic when the Serb reckoned he was not as fast as he was.

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar is happy with the way Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli batted on the third day of the first Test against South Africa in Johannesburg on Friday. Gavaskar says he feels that the duo should carry forward the legacy left by Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.

"Pujara is just like Dravid as he shows the same hunger for runs, same application and same dedication towards the team's cause. Kohli is also batting beautifully at number four position. Rahul and Sachin were absolutely phenomenal not just for few years but decades and that is what these two youngsters should strive to do. They should be like Dravid and Tendulkar and put India ahead of everything," Gavaskar told NDTV.

Nargis Fakhri: 'Varun Dhawan gets my jokes'

The US-born actress revealed that having lived overseas, Dhawan shares her brand of humour.

"He is a really cool guy and easy going. I think he has studied in Nottingham," Fakhri told Bollywood writer Sunny Malik. "You get to talk about all the stories of college.

"He has a different insight or view. He gets my jokes."

The Rockstar and Madras Cafe actor went on to speak about the hard work she has put into her new movie.

"My challenges are very different from other people. My challenges will still be the comic timing in Hindi because it's a foreign language. We will only have to wait and see how it turned out. I must say that I really enjoyed it though."

Fakhri added that she was "excited" about working with Akshay Kumar on the remake of Shaukeen.
